Trump administration rolls out AI Action Plan to boost U.S. tech lead

The Trump administration launched a sweeping AI Action Plan Wednesday targeting U.S. dominance in artificial intelligence. The plan includes more than 90 federal moves focused on speeding AI innovation and infrastructure.

Key points:

  • Boost data centers, semiconductor fabs, and the electric grid
  • Target “ideological bias” in chatbots through new government contractor rules
  • Cut funding for states with “burdensome” AI regulations
  • Force agencies to scrap rules blocking AI progress
  • Set up AI export packages for U.S. allies including hardware, models, and standards

Trump will highlight the plan at an AI summit in Washington, D.C., alongside key allies like David Sacks, his AI and crypto czar.

Sacks stated on a press call:

"The goal here is for the United States to win the AI race."

The White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy backs the plan, aiming to implement it within 6 to 12 months. OSTP policy director Michael Kratsios emphasized speeding up AI-focused infrastructure upgrades.

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives weighed in:

"This is a watershed day for Trump to lay out the AI vision and make sure the U.S. stays ahead of China despite all the trade deal turmoil."

The plan aims to keep pace with China’s fast AI buildup. It also calls for removing “onerous regulation” including Biden-era diversity and climate rules tied to the CHIPS Act.

Sacks highlighted concerns around AI bias after a Google AI incident showing founders as all white men. He said:

"We believe that AI systems should be free of ideological bias and not be designed to pursue socially engineered agendas."

"We have a number of proposals there on how to make sure that AI remains truth-seeking and trustworthy."

Kratsios said federal procurement rules will require AI systems to “allow free speech expression to flourish.” The effort also includes export controls to keep America’s top AI tech out of rival hands.

The plan’s focus on data centers reflects their growing energy demands and role in AI’s rise. Tech giants like Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and xAI are ramping up these facilities now.

The White House claims this aggressive push will cement U.S. leadership as the global AI race heats up.
