Google Photos just launched major AI features. Users can now turn photos into videos and “remix” photos into anime, comics, sketches, or 3D animations.

All new options live in a new “Create” tab in the app. It’ll house AI tools plus classic tools for collages, highlight videos, and more.

Google Photos has over 1.5 billion users. This roll-out puts AI creative power in the hands of lots of people, including those new to AI. Google will collect feedback on AI outputs with thumbs-up or down buttons to improve the experience.

The photo-to-video tool uses Google’s Veo 2 AI model. It animates photos into 6-second clips with two prompt choices: “Subtle movements” or “I’m feeling lucky.” This is similar to YouTube’s new Shorts feature and Google’s Gemini model.

Photo to Video starts rolling out now in the U.S. for Android and iOS.

The Remix feature uses Google’s Imagen AI. It lets users transform any photo into a totally different artistic style in seconds. Remix will arrive in the U.S. on Android and iOS in a few weeks.

Both AI features include invisible SynthID watermarks to mark them as AI-generated. Videos also carry a visual watermark, like those from Gemini.

The Create tab launches in the U.S. in August. Google will keep updating it with new tools and improvements.

The AI rollout comes alongside similar AI updates for YouTube Shorts, which also added photo-to-video tools powered by Veo 2. Veo 3 is coming to Shorts later this summer.
