Lucid Air owners can finally use Tesla Superchargers in North America starting July 31. The catch? Charging speeds max out at just 50 kW—way slower than Tesla’s 250 kW peak.
The deal, struck nearly two years ago, lets all Lucid Air models charge at Tesla’s V3 and higher Superchargers using a $220 adapter. But Lucid’s 924-volt system clashes with Tesla’s 400V chargers, capping speeds.
Lucid repurposed its Air’s integrated Wunderbox charger to unlock 50 kW boost on Tesla stations.
Andrew Hussey, Lucid spokesperson, framed the slower charge as a helpful option for road trips or for those near Superchargers.
Unlike the Air sedan, Lucid’s new Gravity SUV ships with Tesla’s North America Charging Standard (NACS) port built in, signaling a full shift away from CCS.
Tesla kicked off the NACS push in 2022 by sharing its connector design. Ford led adoption in May 2023, followed by GM, Rivian, Honda, Mercedes, Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota.
Lucid was among the last to join, but its next EV will fully embrace Tesla’s charger format.
Andrew Hussey, Lucid spokesperson, said:
“Engineers repurposed hardware in the Air’s integrated charging system, called Wunderbox, to make the system work and activate 50kW boost charging when using a Supercharger.”
“We view the 50kW charging for Air as another option for owners who are on roadtrips, or live or work closer to Superchargers.”
