Google’s AI search summaries are tanking traffic for Dutch news sites, putting their funding at risk.
The problem started this spring when Google rolled out AI-generated answer blocks, called “AI overviews,” in search results across the Netherlands and parts of Europe. These AI summaries show up at the top of search pages, pushing down regular links.
News outlets say this means fewer clicks to their sites and a big hit to ad revenue. 
Dutch and European media groups told BNR this move could threaten their survival. They’ve complained since the launch, warning the AI overviews steal page views.
No word yet if Google plans changes or how it will address the backlash.
