Wingmate survey finds 57% of daters trust AI over people for relationship advice. Even more shocking: 41% admit to using AI to write breakup messages.
The trend is picking up fast. People are outsourcing their toughest conversations to ChatGPT and other AI tools. The reasoning? Clarity and avoiding emotional discomfort.
But not everyone’s happy. One Redditor shared this painful example:
“My (F28) (Ex) Boyfriend (M29) broke up with me over text, and he didn’t even write the message himself,”
“It seemed so robotic and not like him, so I put it in an AI detector. Turns out it’s 100% AI. He told me he loved me 2 hours before. Our relationship wasn’t perfect, but there’s no way a person who loves you does that. We were both very serious about the relationship (at least he said it all the time), so it just hurts.”
Using AI to craft breakup texts is stirring controversy. Some say it’s cowardly, others see benefits. AI can help organize thoughts for difficult talks, but many believe the actual conversation should be in person—unless safety is an issue.
AI’s role doesn’t stop there. Many daters are turning to ChatGPT to process their feelings post-breakup instead of venting to friends.
One Reddit user described their experience:
“It felt like a therapist who you could ask the most embarrassing questions, and have the same conversation over and over without judgment. I really recommend it to anyone who is hurting, especially those who feel lonely or don’t want to feel like a burden to their loved ones (you never are).”
Another added that chatting with AI helps avoid oversharing and recognize unhealthy relationship patterns.
AI is quickly becoming the new third wheel in romance—for better or worse.
