Tesla is gearing up to sell EVs in India for the first time. Bloomberg reports the company plans to open its first showroom in Mumbai and could start deliveries as soon as August.
Soon after the news broke, Tesla launched an India-specific account on Elon Musk’s X platform. Their only post so far features a Mumbai skyline illustration with the caption "Coming soon."
The rollout follows Tesla’s recent expansion into Saudi Arabia earlier this year, another fresh market. 
India poses big challenges. Tesla will have to export vehicles, which will face a steep 70% import duty, according to Reuters. The high cost could limit Tesla’s reach.
Tesla almost made a deal for a local factory after talks with Indian officials, but never sealed the agreement.
