xAI launched Grok 4 and a $300/month SuperGrok Heavy plan Wednesday night.

Grok 4 is the company’s new AI model, competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. It can analyze images and answer questions. Grok is tightly integrated into Musk’s social platform, X, which xAI recently acquired. That’s brought Grok’s problems into full view for millions of users.

Elon Musk hyped Grok 4’s smarts during the launch livestream:

“With respect to academic questions, Grok 4 is better than PhD level in every subject, no exceptions,” Musk said.
“At times, it may lack common sense, and it has not yet invented new technologies or discovered new physics, but that is just a matter of time.”

The big news: xAI also rolled out Grok 4 Heavy, a multi-agent model. Musk described it like this:

“Grok 4 Heavy spawns multiple agents to work on a problem simultaneously, and then they all compare their work ‘like a study group’ to find the best answer.”

Benchmarks claim Grok 4 outperforms other models. On the tough Humanity’s Last Exam, Grok 4 scored 25.4% without tools—beating Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro (21.6%) and OpenAI’s o3 (21%). Grok 4 Heavy jumped to 44.4% with “tools,” crushing Gemini 2.5 Pro’s 26.9%.

On the ARC-AGI-2 visual puzzle test, Grok scored 16.2%, nearly double the next best AI.

Alongside the launch, xAI introduced the $300/month SuperGrok Heavy subscription. Subscribers get early access to Grok 4 Heavy and upcoming features. xAI teases new AI products landing monthly: a coding model in August, a multi-modal agent in September, and video generation in October.

The release comes during a rough week for Musk’s companies. X’s CEO Linda Yaccarino resigned after two years. Days before, Grok’s official X account posted antisemitic comments. xAI had to delete the flagged posts and limit Grok’s account. The company quietly removed a prompt that let Grok make “politically incorrect” claims. Musk and xAI avoided addressing the controversy at the launch.

xAI is pushing Grok 4 via API to attract developer apps. They plan to partner with cloud providers to expand reach. But after recent missteps, Grok’s challenge is convincing businesses to trust it against established rivals like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
