Spotify and other streaming platforms are drowning in AI-generated music — some of it bizarre, NSFW, and raking in millions of listens.
The latest cringe-worthy example: “Make Love to My Shitter” by BannedVinylCollection. The AI-made track popped up on Spotify right after Brace Belden finished listening to Lucinda Williams’ 1992 album. He thought it was some wild throwback novelty record before realizing it was AI-generated.
BannedVinylCollection, aka “JB,” confirmed all of his weird, butt-themed songs like “Grant Me Rectal Delight” and “Taste My Ass” are AI-made. He says the songs take hours to make and he pulls about $200 monthly on Spotify, mostly earning through Patreon and Bandcamp. 
Tim Ingham, founder of Music Business Worldwide, tracked 13 AI artists on Spotify with a combined 4.1 million monthly listeners. Not all tracks are goofy; some imitate popular genres like country.
No comment from Spotify so far.
French streaming app Deezer flags 18% of daily uploads as AI – roughly 600,000 songs a month. Deezer removes some AI content but doesn’t let users block AI tracks yet.
Belden is blunt:
“I fully believe that all streaming platforms shouldn’t allow the music to be uploaded.”
None have a total AI ban. Spotify and YouTube ban AI that deepfakes real artists. YouTube requires creators to label realistic AI content. Spotify has no AI disclosure rule.
The surge follows recent media coverage of the Velvet Sundown, an AI-generated psych-rock band that hit over 500,000 monthly Spotify listeners within weeks — with AI-generated images and music.
AI tunes are flooding streams. Listeners are often clueless about what’s real. And platforms aren’t ready to stop the flood.
