Meta is launching a new AI business unit called Meta Superintelligence Labs. Mark Zuckerberg announced the move in an internal memo on June 30.

The unit will be led by fresh hires, including former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ex-GitHub CEO Nat Friedman. Eleven more recent hires will also join the team.

The lab covers Meta’s foundation models, product teams, FAIR (Fundamental AI Research), and next-gen AI models.

Zuckerberg laid out the plan in the memo, emphasizing a tight, talent-heavy group:

“I’ve spent the past few months meeting top folks across Meta, other AI labs, and promising startups to put together the founding group for this small talent-dense effort,” Zuckerberg said.
“We’re still forming this group and we’ll ask several people across the AI org to join this lab as well.”

Zuckerberg has been hands-on with AI recruiting, meeting potential hires at his homes in Lake Tahoe and Palo Alto since early June.

Meta has also made big moves in AI talent acquisition. They reportedly offered $100 million in signing bonuses to lure OpenAI workers, as confirmed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on June 18.

Meta’s recent investment in Scale AI brought Wang onboard, who will stay on Scale’s board. Talks to hire Friedman and AI investor Daniel Gross led to acquisitions in the AI startup venture capital space, including the NFDG fund.

CNBC confirmed both Friedman and Gross are now part of Meta’s AI push.

Meta has yet to respond to requests for comment.
