xAI is building a powerful file editor for Grok, adding spreadsheet support and real-time AI help inside the editor.

The leak comes from reverse engineer Nima Owji, who spotted the feature in code. He tweeted:

BREAKING: xAI is working on an advanced FILE EDITOR for GROK!
It even supports SPREADSHEETS!
You can talk to Grok and ask it to assist you at the same time you’re editing the files!

This signals xAI is aiming to compete with OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft by embedding AI copilots directly into productivity tools.

The company has been launching tools pointing this way. In April 2025, xAI rolled out Grok Studio, a split-screen workspace to collaborate on docs, code, reports, and even browser games. It also introduced Workspaces that organize files and chats in one place.

Google’s Gemini Workspace is the closest comparison, letting users chat with AI while editing Docs and Sheets. But Gemini only works inside Google’s ecosystem.

It’s unclear what file types xAI’s editor will support beyond spreadsheets or if it will become a full productivity suite to rival Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.

If Owji’s leak is legit, this advanced editor is a step toward Elon Musk’s plan to make X an “everything app” with docs, chat, payments, and social media all in one.

TechCrunch has reached out to xAI for confirmation and more details.
