EU’s AI Act rollout faces calls to hit pause over missing standards

Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is pushing to delay parts of the EU’s AI Act rollout. The law, which became official last year but is still being phased in, lacks the technical standards needed for companies to comply on key points like cybersecurity and human oversight.

Kristersson warned this could cause Europe to fall behind on tech or lose access to some AI applications.

The idea of pausing the rollout is gaining momentum. European Commission’s tech chief Henna Virkkunen said a pause is possible if the proper guidance isn’t ready in time.

Swedish MEP Arba Kokalari backed Kristersson, urging a “stop the clock” move to give companies more time. She also wants the AI Act included in the Commission’s upcoming digital simplification package.

Arba Kokalari stated:

“If standards are not ready in time, we should stop the clock for certain parts of the AI Act and give companies more time,”

The EU AI Act aims to regulate AI risks but hinges on standards still in progress. This debate over timing could reshape how strict and fast the rules are enforced across Europe.
