Indian Army tests AI-powered Negev light machine gun at 14,000 feet

The Indian Army tested an AI-enabled version of the Negev light machine gun (LMG) in the mountains at 14,000 feet (4,267 meters). The weapon demonstrated autonomous target identification and engagement, according to India Today.

Local developer BSS Material reported the system kept “stable target acquisition, adaptive fire control, and semi-autonomous surveillance throughout the trials.”

The weapon builds on Israel Weapon Industries’ combat-proven Negev NG7. It integrates a multi-sensor AI module for automatic target detection, friend-foe classification, and real-time engagement.

The AI system is packed with optical and thermal sensors, ballistic compensation for wind, range, and temperature, plus encrypted remote command functions. It is designed for tough Kashmir border conditions with low visibility.

The AI module is platform-agnostic. It works on LMGs, counter-drone systems, tripods, remote weapon stations, unmanned ground vehicles, and static posts.

Potential use cases include base defense, convoy protection, and perimeter security—especially where enemies may outnumber defenders. The automatic detection and engagement capabilities cut down on human intervention, fitting for remote, high-risk zones.

BSS Material stated:

“The system maintained stable target acquisition, adaptive fire control, and semi-autonomous surveillance throughout the trials.”
