OpenAI has wiped all mentions of io, the hardware startup co-founded by Apple’s Jony Ive, from its website and social media. This happens just after OpenAI announced its nearly $6.5 billion acquisition of io, with plans to build custom AI hardware.
The issue started when Iyo, a hearing device startup spun out of Google’s moonshot factory, filed a trademark lawsuit over the name “io.” OpenAI says the deal is still on but removed content due to a court order.
The original blog post and a nine-minute video with Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are gone. The post had said io’s team would join OpenAI to work closer with its San Francisco-based research and engineering teams.
OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood responded with an update:
This page is temporarily down due to a court order following a trademark complaint from iyO about our use of the name ‘io.’ We don’t agree with the complaint and are reviewing our options.
