Huawei keeps its chip game alive despite US sanctions.

The trouble started in August 2020 when the US Commerce Department banned sales of semiconductor products made with US tech to Huawei and its affiliates without a license. This forced Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the world’s top chipmaker, to cut ties with Huawei and its chip design unit HiSilicon.

Five years later, in 2025, Huawei is still standing strong. The company’s AI chip efforts have not died off like many predicted.

Jensen Huang, CEO of AI chip giant Nvidia, has publicly acknowledged Huawei’s comeback in the integrated circuit market.
