OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says AI will make his kids more capable, not smarter, than humans.

Altman welcomed his first child in February and shared his thoughts on the impact of AI on parenting and the next generation on the new OpenAI Podcast.

He expects his kids will never outsmart AI but will grow up highly capable thanks to tools like ChatGPT.

Sam Altman stated:

"My kids will never be smarter than AI."
"They will grow up vastly more capable than we grew up, and able to do things that we cannot imagine, and they’ll be really good at using AI."
"I don’t think my kids will ever be bothered by the fact that they’re not smarter than AI."

Altman also flagged social risks. He warned society will have to manage new challenges like parasocial relationships and AI dependence.

He added:

"Again, I suspect this is not all going to be good."
"There will be problems. People will develop these somewhat problematic — or, maybe, very problematic — parasocial relationships, and, well, society will have to figure out new guardrails. But the upsides will be tremendous."

On parenting, Altman admitted relying heavily on ChatGPT for baby care advice right after his son’s birth.

He commented:

"Clearly, people have been able to take care of babies without ChatGPT for a long time."
"I don’t know how I would have done that."

Altman also acknowledged ChatGPT’s well-known flaw: hallucinations.

He noted:

"People have a very high degree of trust in ChatGPT, which is interesting, because AI hallucinates."
"It should be the tech that you don’t trust that much."
