Apple launched a new AI-powered update to its Shortcuts app at WWDC 2025.

Shortcuts can now directly tap into Apple Intelligence and use Apple’s on-device large language model (LLM). Developers get access to this LLM as well.

Users can run AI models on their device or via Private Compute to generate responses. Those responses then feed into their shortcuts. A student, for example, can compare lecture transcriptions to notes and highlight missed points automatically. The update also supports pulling in ChatGPT for extra input.

New “intelligent actions” let users summarize text with Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools or create images via Image Playground inside their shortcuts.

Apple has made these features available for testing starting Monday.

The update follows Apple’s delayed AI-enhanced Siri upgrade, which promised more personalized help but got pushed back.

This AI boost could make Shortcuts easier to use for regular users, not just power users. So far, Shortcuts have handled tasks like making memes, tracking time, saving PDFs, and more — now AI will help automate and expand that.

This might also serve as a stop-gap for Apple’s ongoing Siri AI delays by letting iPhone users feel more efficient through AI-assisted automation — if they’re willing to invest time setting it up.

Apple emphasized the update during WWDC as part of broader AI efforts across devices.
