The EU’s AI rules face a possible delay as industry groups push for a “stop-the-clock” on implementation. The new regulations hit providers of complex AI models starting August 2, but crucial standards and a code of practice are still unfinished.

Companies are pressing for a pause in deadlines until detailed guidance arrives. Some EU ministers are open to the idea after discussions last Friday.

Poland’s junior digital minister, Dariusz Standerski, called the industry’s request “reasonable” in a POLITICO interview. But he stressed delay alone isn’t enough without a clear plan.

> “First, we need to have a plan: what we want to do within those additional months,”
> Standerski said during a meeting in Luxembourg under the Polish Council presidency.
> Only then would Poland consider being “open” to stopping the clock.

The EU is under pressure from multiple sides—including lobbying tied to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration—to clarify and finalize the framework before companies must comply. The standoff could push back the AI regulatory timeline further.
