X just updated its developer agreement to block AI training on its content.

The change landed Wednesday under “Reverse Engineering and other Restrictions.” It adds this blunt rule: no using the X API or content to fine-tune or train large language models.

This hits right after Elon Musk’s xAI took over X in March. xAI clearly wants to stop rivals from mining X’s data for free.

Last year, X actually allowed public data use for AI training. Then last October, it opened the door to third parties using that data. Now it slammed that door shut.

Reddit and The Browser Company’s Dia browser have put up similar AI crawl roadblocks recently, signaling a wider tech trend.

Palmer Luckey stated:

“You shall not and you shall not attempt to (or allow others to) […] use the X API or X Content to fine-tune or train a foundation or frontier model,”
