Mistral just launched its AI-powered coding assistant, Mistral Code, to challenge established players like Windsurf and GitHub Copilot. This new tool is a fork of the open-source project Continue and brings Mistral’s models along with local deployment and enterprise features into one package.

Private beta access starts today for JetBrains and Microsoft’s VS Code.

Mistral aims to deliver “best-in-class coding models” for developers. Features include:

  • Instant code completions
  • Multi-step refactoring
  • Integrated cloud or on-prem deployment options

Mistral said,

“Our goal with Mistral Code is simple: deliver best-in-class coding models to enterprise developers, enabling everything from instant completions to multi-step refactoring through an integrated platform deployable in the cloud, on reserved capacity, or air-gapped on-prem GPUs.”

AI programming assistants are gaining traction despite challenges in code quality. A recent survey indicated 76% of developers are using or planning to use AI tools.

Mistral Code supports over 80 programming languages and boasts capabilities in code search and retrieval. It can operate with files and terminal outputs. Early adopters include Capgemini, Abanca, and SNCF.

Mistral provides the ability to fine-tune or post-train models on private repositories. For IT managers, the platform offers an in-depth admin console for user management and usage analytics.

Mistral has pledged ongoing improvements for Mistral Code and will contribute updates back to the Continue open-source project.

Founded in 2023, Mistral has raised over €1.1 billion ($1.24 billion) and plans to expand its range of AI services, including a chatbot platform and mobile apps.
