Pope Francis sees the Vatican playing a crucial role. He met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, emphasizing the need for "ethical and human-centered" AI development. 
"The Vatican’s interest in AI is not strange,” said Savona. “Francis also took a great interest in climate change, which is a contemporary issue. The church’s mission is to be faithful to core principles while adapting to the world."
Experts believe the Vatican could leverage its influence in the Global South to ensure broader and more democratic access to AI, mitigating the risks of technology monopolies. Savona noted this could lead to a globally standardized approach to AI regulation, vital in a rapidly evolving landscape.
