Samsung is reportedly eyeing Perplexity AI as a potential replacement for Gemini in its devices, starting with the Galaxy S26 next year. This comes after the company integrated Gemini more deeply with One UI 7.0 last year.
Perplexity AI is a digital assistant and web search engine that competes with the likes of ChatGPT, Claude AI, and Gemini.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Samsung is close to finalizing a deal to invest in Perplexity AI. An announcement could be made as soon as this year. This investment has been in discussion since early 2023, with meetings happening in South Korea recently.
Samsung may preload Perplexity onto future smartphones, making it the default AI assistant on the Galaxy S26. The integration might extend to Bixby and Samsung Internet as well. Talks about creating an “AI-infused operating system” and AI agents to work in conjunction with Perplexity and other AI assistants are also on the table.
This strategy could reduce Samsung’s dependency on Google’s Gemini AI, allowing them to partner with multiple AI providers, similar to Apple’s strategy. Apple CEO Eddy Cue praised Perplexity during the Google antitrust trial, noting the company’s interest in possibly integrating it into Siri, alongside ChatGPT and Gemini.
Negotiations between Samsung and Perplexity aren’t finalized, so the outcome is still uncertain. Perplexity is currently trying to raise $500 million at a $14 billion valuation. They’ve already teamed up with Motorola to offer AI capabilities on its latest phones.
